The Author
From the classroom to the stage, and eventually to the historical novel.
Philip McConnell is an award-winning educator who taught in schools and colleges across the United Kingdom for seventeen years before relocating to Singapore in 1991. Over the next quarter of a century, he became a pivotal figure in Singaporean humanities education.
During his tenure, Philip taught literature at Anderson Junior College and later at Raffles Junior College, where he worked with the prestigious Humanities Scholarship Programme. In 2008, he was appointed Master Teacher for Literature, and subsequently joined the founding team of the English Language Institute of Singapore (ELIS) as Senior Master Teacher.
A lifelong teacher of literature and philosophy, he has held a particular, enduring passion for Shakespeare and the Elizabethan period. An Allowed Fool is the culmination of those scholarly interests—shaped over several years as an exacting labour of love.
His writing life has never been confined to academia. Alongside his educational leadership, Philip was a principal playwright for the Masquerade Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre Company, creating touring theatrical experiences across Asia for more than two decades, as well as scripting acclaimed tribute productions for the Singapore stage.

Decades spent exploring the moral dilemmas of classical philosophy and English literature with students in the UK and Singapore. These years of textual analysis and pedagogy laid the intellectual foundation for a novel deeply concerned with justice, conscience, and conscience silenced.
For more than twenty years, Philip wrote interactive scripts for the Masquerade Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre Company. Touring throughout Asia, these productions brought intricate plotting, razor-sharp dialogue, and classic whodunit suspense to audiences from grand hotels to the storied carriages of the Eastern & Oriental Express.
Venturing into musical biography, Philip scripted No Regrets, a moving dramatic tribute celebrating the life and artistry of French icon Edith Piaf. The production resonated deeply with audiences, enjoying three separate, successful runs in Singapore theatres.
All of these artistic currents—scholarly intimacy with Elizabethan verse, dramatic timing forged on stage, and an instinct for mystery—converge in his debut novel, published in 2026 by London Book Publishers.
